The Serie A club announced on Tuesday that Jose Mourinho will take over as Roma’s coach on a three-year contract from next season.
José Mourinho to take over as Roma manager on a three-year deal from next season:
Mourinho, who led Manchester United to the Europa League in 2017, has signed a contract with Roma that runs until 30 June 2024.
Since that announcement, there has been only one topic in Rome. Television and radio do not end with special. Fans are excited and have forgotten their recent struggle.
Mourinho has claimed 25 major trophies in his career to date and joins a club that has not won a Serie A since 2001.
Jose Mourinho has been the last mob in Italy, where he managed Inter Milan in the Champions League to success, two Serie A titles and a Coppa Italia victory.
Mourinho is one of only three managers to have won the Champions League with two different clubs, a feat he has repeated in the Europa League.
What will be demanded is to bring a “long-term and permanently winning culture” to a club that has not won a trophy since 2008.
In Fonseca’s two years under Roma, Roma repeatedly failed to develop a winning mindset, reflecting the disturbing lack of concentration in key moments.
Mourinho, who was sacked by Premier League club Tottenham last month, will replace Portuguese Paulo Fonseca, who will leave Roma at the end of his current campaign.
club president Dan Friedkin and vice president Ryan Friedkin said:
“We are delighted to welcome Jose Mourinho to the AS Roma family,”.
“Jose’s appointment is a big step in building a long-term and lasting winning culture at the club.”
“A great champion who has won trophies at every level, Jose will provide tremendous leadership and experience to our ambitious project.
Mourinho returned to Italy, where he attracted Inter Milan to a treble in 2010.
The 58-year-old won the Champions League with Porto in 2004, three Premier League titles with Chelsea and La Liga in 2012, with Real Madrid.
Roma had earlier confirmed that Fonseca would leave the club three times after two years with the Italian champions, who have been trophy-less since 2008.
Fonseca, 48, joined the club in 2019 on a two-year contract with a third-year option if he arrived at the club in the Champions League next season.
The club finished fifth in the last Campaign of Serie A and is currently seventh, nine points behind city rivals Lazio, sixth and has a game in hand.
Roma general manager Tiago Pinto said:
“When Jose became available, we immediately. Jump on the spot and talk to the biggest manager of all time.”
“We were blown away by Jose s desire to win and his passion for the game: regardless of how many trophies he won, his main focus is always on the next one. He has knowledge, experience and leadership to compete at all levels.”
Mourinho said in a statement:
“Thank you to the Friedkin family for choosing me to lead this great club and be part of their vision,”.
“The incredible spirit of the Roma fans persuaded me to accept the job and I can’t wait to start next season.”
“It is the same ambition that has always motivated me and together we want to build a winning project over the upcoming years.
