INSTAGRAM NOW LETS YOU CONTROL SENSITIVE CONTENT:

On Tuesday (July 20th), Instagram announced that it was changing the control users have over sensitive content.

This means that each individual can now decide how much sensitive content they want to see on their Explore page and shape Instagram into the experience they want it to be.

In a blog post, Instagram said:

“This new feature gives you control over sensitive content. You can decide to leave things as they are or you can adjust the Sensitive Content Control to see more or less of some types of sensitive content.”

“We recognize that everybody has different preferences for what they want to see in Explore, and this control will give people more choice over what they see,” they continued.

Today we’re giving you more ways to control what you see on Explore. We recognize that everybody has different preferences for what they want to see there, so this control will give you new options to see more or less sensitive content. https://t.co/0ER71MP4Pi

HOW DO YOU CONTROL IT?

To control sensitive content on Instagram, follow these steps:

Go to your profile.

Tap the settings menu in the top right-hand corner.

Press ‘Account’.

Click on ‘Sensitive Content Control’.

Then you can decide whether you want to keep the settings as default, limit sensitive content or see more by sliding the bar. You can also allow more or less of certain types of sensitive content

You can change your settings at any time, but the ‘allow’ option is not available for people under 18.

INSTAGRAM STILL HAS COMMUNITY GUIDELINES:

It’s important to remember that Instagram still follows its Community Guidelines.

Whilst you are able to control what sensitive content you see, there are still some posts that will be removed by Instagram itself.

“Our Community Guidelines outline what kind of content can be on Instagram, and the point of these guidelines is to keep people safe. We don’t allow hate speech, bullying or other content that might present a risk of harm to people,” Instagram said in the blog post.

Sensitive content does not break Instagram’s Community Guidelines, but it is content that they deem could be harmful or distressing to some people.

“You can think of sensitive content as posts that don’t necessarily break our rules, but could potentially be upsetting to some people — such as posts that may be se*ually suggestive or violent,” they continued.
